Step 1: leading-in:
A beautiful song – Two Butterflies to lead the students to think about the question.
Q: What made it possible for you to listen to this beautiful song? Then lead the students to the answer: the invention of electricity. Two more questions to lead the students to the topic of science.
Q 1.When was electricity discovered?
Q 2.How was it used in the following two hundred years?
Step 2: Pre-reading:
Try to introduce the students the two books The Mysterious Island and 2000 leagues Under the Sea. Then ask the students who have written them and activate their knowledge about Jules Verne.
Step 3: Listening and understading:
Ask the students to listen to the tape carefully and try to fill in the missing information:

Step 4: Fast reading:
Ask the students to read the passage fast, then try to divide the passage into three parts and then summarize the main idea of each part.
Pay attention,you only need to go through the first and last sentence of each paragraph.
Part 1(para 1):General information about Jules Verne
Part 2(paras2-5):Information about his famous novel---20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
Part 3(para 6): Information about another novel---Journey to the centre of the Earth.
Step 5:Careful reading
First, Read part2 carefully and try to answer the following questions:
1 Why do Dr Aronnax, his servant and a Canadian whale hunter set out to find the monster?
2 What does the monster turn out to be?
3 What does Nautilus look like?
Second, Retell the story of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea according to the three questions and answers and the fowllowing outline.
Third, read paragraph5 and Describe the character of Captain Nemo
Captain Nemo is the kind of person of whom it is difficult to say whether you like him or not. You may think he is hard and cruel, but he also has a soft and gentle side.
Fourth, read paragraph six and answer the question: How does the story Journey to the Centre of the Earth begin and end up?
The story begins with the discovery of an ancient document in an old book and in the end, their raft is drawn into a fast stream and with ever increasing speed they are shot out of a volcano in Southern Italy.
Step 6 Discussion:
If you were one man in the Journey to the Center of the Earth, what would you do after shot out of the volcano in southern Italy?
